The process of economic and social development in Bihar has always remained under intense discussion and debate. In recent years, no subject has been so acrimoniously debated as the questions and problems of development of Bihar. With the realisation that unless Bihar develops, India cannot develop, the policy makers and planners are now concerned with what ails the development of Bihar and what alternative strategies are needed to accelerate the process of economic development in the State. The reality in contemporary Bihar is that the State has faced an acute dilemma of development over the last six decades. Such a dilemma may not become sharper in the years ahead but it calls for a scientific understanding on the syndrome of non- development of Bihar.
The twenty-one chapters in this volume- written by one of the leading economists over his thirty-three years' academic career-present an incisive and challenging examination of the central issues, trends and developments of the economy of Bihar and the questions, problems and opportunities they present to the State. Full of acute and perceptive ideas about the socio-economic dynamics, Dr. Jagdish Prasad shows how the future may mark the achievement of the socio-economic objectives of alleviating poverty and unemployment the two great enemies of the State.
The timely book will be valuable reading for any one interested in the problems of economic and social development of Bihar. In particular, it will be of interest to policy makers, planners, administrators and scholars in the field of economic development of Bihar.
