About the Author Dr Udai Prakash Sinha (b. 1956) is Professor of Economics, T.M. Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur. He has authored many books including Planned Development of Resources in a Developing Region (1985), Socio-Economic Dimensions of Integrated Development in India (1991) and IRDP for Weaker Sections (1996). He is editing Journal of Economic Issues' since 2000 published by Planning Forum, and Anga Economic Society, University Department of Economics, T.M. Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur. He has also completed two UGC Major Research Projects and contributed more than 50 research papers to reputed national and international journals of Economics and other social-sciences. 28 Research Scholars have already been awarded Ph.D. degree under his able guidance. Micro-level planning and the regional economics are the areas of his interest and research.

Dr Swargesh Kumar, M.A, Ph.D. is Project Fellow in UGC sponsored Research Project, Dept. of Economics, T.M. Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur and published number of Research Papers in reputed journals. He has presented paper and participated in National Seminar/ Conference regularly. He is member of IEA and BEA.

Preface Tourism today is the world's largest and fastest expanding industry. The vastness of its market, its unpredictability, the diversity of the product itself and above all, the financial and sociological rewards to be gained have made this industry one of the most fiercely competitive industry in the world.

Tourism presents an unparalleled challenge (at the same time opportunity also) to the economics of developing world. Its effect on creating jobs and reducing unemployment is particularly praiseworthy on the industry and commercial endeavours of the country as a whole. The curiosity to know and see the world is bereft of communication network, it is a matter of great pride, privilege and personal courage to be a voyager. It is also being recognized as an industry. It is also an activity that promotes goodwill and fellowship around the world and is great educational asset. It is no less an economic activity and its industry ranking is the second in the world next to oil industry. It is an inseparable combination of economics and sociological issues. It has a tremendous potential for earning foreign exchange, generating employment, increasing tax revenue and promoting business activities like transport, fruit production, agriculture crafts, hotel industry, entertainment and productive services.

The study area--Bihar is a land affluent in natural beauty, whispering forests, sparkling lakes, forts and palaces, holy rivers, holy shrines and natural hot springs emerging from a backdrop of eternal snow.

A magnetic destination attracting throngs of tourists every year with tremendous potential of growth in number and quality, Bihar is one of the eastern states in the Indian union. It is endowed with immense tourism potential and is surrounded by the states of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh on its three sides. In the north, it touches the international boundaries of Nepal. Bihar was in days gone by, the arena on which great empires rose and fell.
