In a multilingual country like India, making a multilingual dictionary is a vital task. In the Northeast, it is still more needful to have a functional knowledge of interregional languages for congenial coexistence, because there are four major languages spoken in this region: Assamese, Bodo, Manipuri and Nepali, besides a number of tribal languages having a good number of speakers. To substantiate that language is not a barrier but a bridge, we have attempted to produce this Brahmaputra Nepali Assamese English Dictionary as a humble work in this direction.
A dictionary is a multipurpose manual, a reference book, a word-meaning book, a word equivalent book, a word treasury book, a word power book, a spelling-book, a self- taught book, a language gauge book, a language study book, an applied linguistics book and many more things.
The main objective of making this trilingual dictionary is to show meaning equivalents in Nepali and Assamese words, where English is used as a mediator of the two to clear off doubt if any.
A word is a meaningful single unit of a sentence in a language. In this dictionary words from Nepali and Assamese have been collected from different sources that somehow meet Assamese and Nepali meaning equivalents; the most common and seemingly words are chosen as to show an affinity of these two languages.
The sociocultural relation of the Nepalese and the Assamese speakers is historical. Since the time of Jayadeva, a king of Nepal who married Assamese princess Rajyamati, the daughter of Harshadeva, the king of Kamarupa, the relation between the two peoples' cultures is unabated. In the field of language also Nepali and Assamese somehow belong to the same stock of Indo-Aryan. Both the languages have undergone from the apabhramsa stage found also in Chariyapada.
Nepali is a distinct branch of Neo-Indo-Aryan stretching over the full expanse of the Sub-Himalayan tract from Assam to Himachal Pradesh and spoken by nearly twenty five millions people throughout the world.
