His life was full of trials, yet he remained steadfast in his faith, devotion and duties. He boldly proclaimed the glory of Bhagwan Swaminarayan as the supreme God and Gunatitanand Swami as the manifest form of Aksharbrahman.
Since decades, his life, work and message have been a source of immense inspiration.
The English translation of Brahmaswarup Shri Pragji Bhakta comprises of inspiring incidents and elevating spiritual messages from the life of Bhagatji Maharaj. It will enable readers, young and old, to understand the true principles of the Akshar-Purushottam philosophy revealed by Bhagwan Swaminarayan. The book reveals the ideals of seva, guru bhakti and austerity in the life of Bhagatji Maharaj and eloquently portrays his unflagfing efforts in proclaiming the glory of Gunatitanand Swami as Aksharbrahman, the divine abode and ideal disciple of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
Yogiji Maharaj encouraged for youths to become proficient in all aspects of spirituality. He also inspired them to master different languages, so that they could effectively convey Bhagwan Swaminarayan's life and teachings to people of different backgrounds. Pramukh Swami Maharaj has continued to provide such inspiration to BAPS youths worldwide. This translation is a product of their foresight and blessings. I hope that others will also be motivated to contribute their language skills to fulfil the wishes of Yogiji Maharaj and Pramukh Swami Maharaj.
Yogiji Maharaj used to bless that all who read this biography will attain the brahmic state. Pramukh Swami Maharaj also expresses that all youths should read this biography for their all- round spiritual development.
I request all youths to avail of this fine translation, learn from the life and message of Brahmaswarup Bhagatji Maharaj and earn the blessings of Yogiji Maharaj and Pramukh Swami Maharaj.
This translation has been possible due to the blessings, guidance and inspiration of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. It is the result of four years of dedicated effort by Shri Amar Parekh, who is a Masters graduate in Engineering Science from Oxford University, England.
Amar is actively involved in the youth and other activities at the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in London. Born and raised in England, he has acquired a sound understanding of Gujarati and has applied this knowledge for this noble endeavour.
On behalf of Swaminarayan Aksharpith I express my sincere gratitude to Shri Amar Parekh for his delgent efforts in completing this monumental translation and pray to Bhagwan Swaminarayan and gurubari Pramukh Swami Maharaj to shower their blessings upon him.
Brahmaswarup Shri Pragji Bhakta portrays the fascinating life and work of a great spiritual master. This book is a humble attempt in translating the original Gujarati biography written several decades ago by Shri Harshadbhai T. Dave. He had based the book on the narrations and manuscripts of Brahmaswarup Shastriji Maharaj.
The initial inspiration for this translation sparked from hearing His Divine Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj express his wish that the biographies of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and the Gunatit Guru Parampara be translated into English. The other principle inspiration for this translation came after reading the Gujarati biography of Brahmaswarup Yogiji Maharaj. It was beyond me to comprehend how Pujya Ishwarcharan Swami had somehow managed to write this comprehensive six-part biography in the midst of managing huge BAPS festivals and other worldwide projects. Further inspiration came from seeing the voluminous biographies of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, Gunatitanand Swami, Bhagatji Maharaj and Shastriji Maharaj, which had been written by the distinguished Shri Harshadbhai T. Dave. He had achieved something truly historic and monumental. He had thoroughly analyzed the many shastras and texts of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya which were in a variety of languages, such as, Sanskrit, Hindi, Gujarati and other local dialects, to produce the distinct and accurate biographies.
On 8 September 2004 at Heathrow Airport, London, I mentioned to Swamishri that during his vicharan of the Asia Pacific region in 2002, he had said that to help eradicate one's base instincts, one should read the biography of Bhagatji Maharaj.
