The present work entitled "A Brief Survey of Socio-Economic History of Medieval Bihar" covers the three K.P. Jayaswal Memorial Lectures which I delivered on 27 & 28 November 1991 under the auspices of K.P. Jayaswal Reserech Institute. It was in September 1991 that Prof. J.C. Jha, the then Director of K.P. Jayaswal Research Institute, asked me to deliver the memorial lectures and thus I got a little over two months time to prepare the same. The shortage of time did not dishearten me and I laboured hard to complete the assigned work by the scheduled date. In this work I have tried to throw light on some important features of socio-economic life of medieval Bihar.
I am grateful to Prof. J.C. Jha, the then Director of K.?. Jayaswal Research Institute for asking me to deliver the Jayaswal Memorial Lectures and also for rendering all help to me in the preparation of the lectures. I am thankful to Dr. Chitaranjan Prasad Sinha, the former Director of K.P. Jayaswal Research Institue for taking great pains in the publication of this work. I am also thank- ful to Dr. Jagdishwar Pandey, the present Director of the K.P. Jayaswal Research Institute who took keen interest for publishing this work. Had he not extended his ready and ungrudging assis- tance to me, this book would not have seen the light of the day!
I also express my sincere thanks to my brothers-in-law Sri K.K. Srivastava, I.A.S. (Retd.) ex-Chief Secretary, Government of Bihar and Dr. D.S. Varma, Retd. Civil Surgeon, for helping me in one way or another in bringing my work to completion.
