FOREWORD

Trade has been the key to economic prosperity of a country since the time immemorial. The traders in ancient period, contacted the other lands either for some earning for maintaining their livelihood or the adventurous ones went out to search for themselves some business for a better life in lands other than their own. It is noticed that marine trade through sea route, though hazardous was more profitable than the non seaborne trade. Therefore, marine traders were mainly responsible for the rise of several ports on coastal belt. Evidences of the existence of several ports on coastal regions of India are available from the remnants of ruins or from references in the literary works or traditional accounts. In fact, there were several ports in ancient period on Coromandal coast, Malabar coast and Bay of Bengal. The local traders of merchantile community of India in their sailing boats could travel on high seas to distant lands such as Burma, Ceylon, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, China, Japan and also Arabian countries and their trading activities could be extended to the western world. The traders with their choice articles collected from domestic indegenous, manufacturing local industries could reach the distant lands in boats for sale of articles in overseas market and the rare attractive choice articles collected from the distant markets could be brought in return to the Indian ports for sale and such articles could pass to the interior rural sectors mainly through the river water connecting the ports, on coastal regions which were then the centres of high commercial activities. This helped the economic prosperity of the country.

PREFACE

Trade is an important aspect of historical studies and is one of the less focussed aspect of orissan history. Trade is one of the keys of the economic life in understanding the past. It is difficult to find out suitable starting and termination points in the economic history of a particular region within a particular period as history is a continuous flow of developments. The period from 1803 1900 is notable for the changes in the economic conditions of the people of orissa with the establishment of british rule. In india, there was a lot of regional variations of economic structure, components and development process. In view of this, the present study titled british trade policy in orissa (1803-1900) strives to undertake a study in the field of trade at regional level.
