Iconography is an interesting and at the same time a difficult subject. It requires not only knowledge of art, but of widely dispersed literatures both secular and religious. It was therefore very courageous for Dr (Mrs) Usha Sinha, M.A. in History, to take up this subject for advanced study and research and she chose Buddhist iconography of Uttar Pradesh as her specific topic. Iconography has its regional variations, and Buddhist iconography is vast and varied because of myriads of God and Goddesses with diverse attitudes.

Dr (Mrs) Usha Sinha has tackled this topic admirably well. She has gone in depth about icons spread out in various museums in U.P. and even abroad and has culled up very useful informations, and interpreted them with exemplary acumen and freshness. She has thrown considerable new light on the subject and has drawn reasonable conclusions about some controversial issues.
