About the Author Gaya Pandey (b. 1954) is a retired Professor of Anthropology, Ranchi University, Ranchi. During his whole academic career, he has to his credit 30 books and 40 articles. Books are on different papers which are taught in different universities of India in undergraduate and postgraduate departments of Anthropology. The books are in both Hindi and English medium. Articles have been published in different journals of repute. He actively participated in more than two dozen national and international seminars held in India. Nine Ph.D. scholars have been awarded Ph.D. degree under his supervision by the University of Ranchi.

Preface The book "Builders of Indian Anthropology" is an attempt to present the profiles and contributions of those Indian and foreign anthropologists who laid the foundation of Indian anthropology in our country by their researches, teachings and studies. They made Indian anthropology to travel from formulatory to critical or analytical phase through constructive phase. And now we have full-fledged Departments of Anthropology in almost all states of our country where Indian anthropology is taught as a paper along with other papers of the subject Anthropology.

This book could achieve its success with the help of a number of persons, scholars and research scholars at different levels of writing. Hence, this is my pious and moral duty to express thanks and gratefulness in their name individually and collectively.

First of all, I extend my sincere gratitude to all my gurus and colleagues whose articles, papers, books and suggestions have proved to be beneficial for me in completion of this book.

I am thankful to all teachers, research scholars and staff of the Department of Anthropology, Ranchi University, Ranchi, who encouraged me time to time to complete this book.

I am thankful to my family members-wife Shrimati Indu Devi, Daughters-Sudha, Suman, Sarita, Anu, son Shekhar, grandson Kushagra and Harshita for their full cooperation in completion of this book in post-retirement period.
