This section, originally a mere index to the Santali-English section of the Dictionary, has in the present edition been radically revised and much expanded. It is not yet, strictly speaking, a complete English-Santali Dictionary. It is planned for the foreigner learning Santali rather than for the Santal learning English, and should be used in conjunction either with Campbell's Santali-English Dictionary or Bodding's Santal Dictionary. In languages which differ so widely in their whole concept and structure as Santali and English, there is often no simple Santali equivalent of an English word-some periphrasis must be found, and it would require an entirely different type of work to meet the needs of the Santal learning English.
For the benefit of the learner, where there is a long list of Santali equivalents to an English word, those in more common use are given first-otherwise, the order is alphabetical. For the benefit of the more advanced student, all the equivalents are retained, since he may be in search of one of the less common words to express his exact meaning.
