-Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Secretary, Department of Health Research & Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research.
Dr Pankaj Vohra completed his MBBS and MD (Pediatrics) training at AIIMS, New Delhi and Fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, USA. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Gastroenterology and is presently practicing in a private hospital chain in Delhi. In his experience of over 20 years as a Pediatric Gastroenterologist he has diagnosed and interacted with hundreds of patients with celiac disease. The challenges faced by celiac patients in their day to day lives, prompted him to write this book, as well as establish a non-profit organization, Celiac India & Beyond Foundation in 2014.
It was not long ago when medical experts did not even consider celiac disease in their patients in India; many believed that this is a disease of the West. This was not to be. A series of well done studies from across the country, by the Indian Council of Medical Research and others have now firmly established that celiac disease is as common among Indians as among western populations.
Celiac disease-a lifelong medical condition that mostly afflicts children is bound to result in many anxieties, questions and concerns. Furthermore, the standard treatment appears so unusual at least initially, that it is bound to compound the misconceptions and myths that surround any lifelong condition. Equally important is the delay in accepting the condition by the parents and immediate family members. The lack of understanding of the disease, and its consequences on the health and well being of the patient are central. This book is a brilliant attempt to bridge all these gaps.
With his years of experience and expertise in the field of pediatric gastroenterology, and celiac disease in particular, Dr. Pankaj Vohra has provided a concise overview of the various components of the disease here including the critical understanding of its diagnosis. The book also demystifies and clarifies many facets of gluten free diet, which is the cornerstone of treatment of celiac disease.
