I have great pleasure in bringing out the book on 'the Chieftains of the Sangam Age' written by Dr. K.D. Thirunavuk karasu. He was well known as a scholar of rare eminer ce. He made a close study of Thirukkural and had published Thirukkural Neethi Ilakkiyam'. 'Thirukkuralil Karpanai Thiranum Nadaga Nalanum' and 'Thirukkural Nuladaivu".
Dr. K. D. Thirunavukkarasu was awarded the prize of Sahitya Akademi for his best contribution the Thirukkural Neethi Ilakkiyam'. He was popularly known as Thirukkural Mani'. Thirukkural Cittar', and Thirukkural Neri Thendral'. In 1978 Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu had honoured him for his best contribution on 'Rajaraja Chola the great' and he was also awarded the prize of Thiru. Vi. Ka. in the year of 1985.
He served for 17 years in the International Institute of Tamil Studies as in the capacity of an associate Professor, Professor and the Director. Dr K. D Thirunavukkarasu, a reputed professor of Tamil, was fully qualified in literary researches. He under took a great task in the research field and he achieved the impossible.
He published 35 books related to Tamil literature, History, Criticism, Drama, Translation, Comparative studies and Compilation. He was a follower of Arignar Anna and he has done Yeoman service in the field of Tamil literature and History.
In the history of Tamil literature, the Sangam period is known as The period of Classical Literature'. Sangam Literature also encompasses historical reference. International Institute of Tamil Studies is now releasing a book on the "Chieftains of the Sangam Age. This book deals with the history of the glorious Chieftains of the Tamil Country during the rule of the Chera, Chola and Pandiya in Tamil Nadu.
