Niranjan Bhagat (1926-2018) was a distinguished Indian writer, poet, and critic writing in Gujarati language. He was also an accomplished translator, editor and an influential teacher of literature. His work is recognized by its definite contribution towards bringing the modern and urban sensibility to Gujarati poetry. Along with the name of the Jnanapeeth award winning Gujarati poet Rajendra Shah (1913-2010). Niranjan Bhagat's name marks the post Gandhian period as the Rajendra-Niranjan Yugin Gujarati literature. He was also a lifelong reader and commentator of the literature of Rabindranath Tagore. His criticism is marked by his deep and rare insights into Western as well as Gujarati literature. The teacher in him contributedsignificantly tohiswriting and madeitbothilluminating and interesting. Brimming with genuinely new observations, his talks were riveting. His booklets about ways of reading poetry - Kavita Kaanthi Vancho (1972) and Aadhunik Kavita: Ketlank Prashno (1972) opened up innumerable possibilities to read and understand poetry as never received before. 'Pravaldveep' his collection of poems about Mumbai, are considered to be path breaking and trendsetting. 'Swadhyayalok volumes 1 to 8'-collection of his critical writings reveal the wide canvas of his reading and interests as well as his deep insight into literary endeavours. Besides the Sahitya Akademi Award, Niranjan Bhagat was also a recipient of Narsi Mehta Award. Premanand Suvarnachandrak, Ranjitram Suvarnachandrak, Narmad Suvarnachandrak, Kumar Chandrak, Satchidananda Samman and Kavyamudra Award.
