The fifth cluster of perspectives contained in this book is notable for its variety of themes. The author reflects on the work of great thinkers like Karl Jaspers and Kafka; examines why we keep letters and photographs, and why some people have pets; she muses over woods and forests, the sea and the seasons, and makes trenchant comments about pilgrimages, frontiers, and punishment. Above all she poses the challenging question 'Who are "we"?".
Margaret Chatterjee has been exploring various genres over the years, and finding different ways of sharing her wide interests. As a student in Oxford she studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics and later spent decades teaching at university level in several countries. She has done intensive research on Gandhi's life and thought and has been a prolific author of books which raise challenging issues in a highly readable form.
