Dr. Benoytosh Bhattacharyya was born in Bengal, the home of Homoeopathy. Right from his early years he was fascinated with Homoeopathy as most of the members of the family were treated Homoeopathicaly by Dr. Mahendranath Bhattacharya of Boinchi. He has seen some remarkable cures and was thus convinced about the efficacy of this system.
After completing his Ph.D. from Dacca University he joined Baroda State Service in 1924. My sister Pratima was one year old when he went to Baroda and I was born two years later in 1926.
For common complaints of children he himself used to give Homoeopathic medicines as there was no Homoeopath in Baroda at that time. He then requested Dr. Roy. One of his Homoeopathic friends in Calcutta, to come to Baroda and start his practice there. Unfortunately, due to the language problems which were Marathi and Gujarati. Dr. Roy could not establish himself and hence, after sometime, left Baroda.
This forced my father to give medicines to his family and friends and gradually he became known as a good prescriber. People started coming to him for various types of complaints. At that time he was practising classical Homoeopathy by taking symptoms and prescribing on the totality of symptoms. As the number of patients started increasing he could not manage with this method and started looking for some easier method to prescribe. Being a Sanskritist he had read books on Ayurveda and this had led him to think and he started to amalgamate the principles of Ayurveda with Homoeopathy. This led to the discovery of how Tridosha and Homoeopathy could support each other.
In Ayurveda he found descriptions of pulse and the symptoms of those pulses. Also he found some substances mentioned in the books which could ameliorate the three elements: VATA (Air). PITTA (Fire) and KAPHA (Water). He found that silver pacified fire and gold pacified water and he started using the two remedies in Homoeopathy. ARGEN. TUM and AURUM, for these two elements and was satisfied to note that they worked remarkably well.
He then started to discover other remedies for different types of pulse. Once this was done he prescribed only on the pulse without taking any other symptoms and found that this worked very well. This knowledge saved a lot of his time and he could see a number of patients in a very short time. I have seen him treat 150 to 200 patients in an hour and the maximum number he has seen in one day was nearly 1500 patients. This was incredible and nobody would believe this unless they came to see for themselves.
We were staying in a society where most of the renowned allopathic doctors were staying and they were irritated as the number of their clients decreased appreciably. These doctors appealed to the government at Baroda to stop the practice of an unlicensed doctor and the government conceded to their demand. This raised a great commotion amongst the patients of my father and they sent a memorandum to the Dewan (Chief Minister) to allow my father to practise. Due to great public demand the Government conceded to their demand and gave my father special permission to practise. This happened as far as I remember in the year 1941. He practised in this way till his retirement from Baroda Service in 1952.
In spite of treating lacs of cases with Homoeopathy medicines he found that there were some cases which did not respond to the Homoeopathic remedies. In the Ayurvedic books he found that where medicines prepared from the Vegetables or Metal kingdoms did not work. gems were found very effective. Unfortunately there were no remedies in the Homoeopathic Materia Medica prepared with gems. The Ayurvedic Gem remedies were very costly as the gems were destroyed during preparations of the medicines either by burning them or crushing them. Due to the cost it was beyond the reach of the common man.
