About The Book

Astrology is a sacred science. It is an ancient science. Astrology Astrology is an avid has its origin in Vedas. According to Vedic Astrology system. astrology is closely linked with accumulated Karma from past lives which get manifested in the present lives. So what we are today and what we will be later is already decided by our past and present Karmas. This book seeks to examine the question whether astrology has any relevance and meaning in this day and age. This discussion is presented against the backdrop of Karma in human life. What is Karma then? Is it the sum total of the activities, good and bad, we have done in the past? Yes, in a way, it is. If we have done good deeds in our past lives, then the effect of the same will continue in the present life also. Similarly, if we have done bad deeds, the effect of the same will follow us in the present lives also. The only way to reduce or nullify the Karma effects of past lives is to do good things during the present life. If we had done good things in our past lives but do bad things during our present lives, then the same will be continued in our next birth. The core idea of Karma is that there exists a cycle of birth and death and till such time, we completely nullify the effects of Karma, the same will continue. These can be explained as below, based on the understanding that there are three types of Karmas:

1. Sanchita Karma: These are accumulated works or actions, one has completed and accumulated in the past lives. These cannot be changed but only reduced.

2. Prarabdha Karma: This is that portion of the past Karma that is responsible for the happenings in the present life. If somebody is well placed and happy today, it is because he or she is destined to be so because of his or her Sanchita Karma.

3. Agami Karma: This is the Karma, we are creating for ourselves, during the current life. This will become our Karma in the future. To simplify, if we do good things now, our Sanchita Karma accumulation will gradually diminish which will have positive impacts in the future lives.

To summarise, Karma is, in fact, some sort of a routine. Take an example of a student who continues to do well in lower classes. He will ultimately do well in his graduation or post graduation. It is because it is his habit or it is usual for him to do so. Similarly, a person who did bad things in previous lives will continue to do bad things in the present life, unless he is guided properly that he should do good things to ward off the evil effects of Karma. Astrology can be effectively used as a guide to ward off Karma. This is, in fact, the effectiveness of Astrological predictions.

How will one know about his or her Karma? How will one reduce it? This is where Astrology can be of help. Karma can be understood from the astrological charts, based on positioning of planets. This is the purpose of Astrology. Astrological predictions are nothing but indications of what good and bad can happen to the natives' lives and the timing of the same. For example, one may want to become a successful businessman. However, if based on his planetary positions (which are indications of his Karma), he is not destined to become a successful businessman, he will not succeed. Similarly, someone may want to become a Doctor. However, if he or she is destined to become a nurse, the same will only happen. Astrology, thus, can be used as a tool or guide to advise or forewarn the native about likely happenings, so that corrective actions can be taken at the appropriate time. Astrological charts are the 'instruction manuals', God has created for human lives, based on which, one has to understand how we need to operate or conduct ourselves in the present life.

Astrology is not all about foretelling. It is also not fatalism. It cannot be hundred percent accurate. Planetary placements and positioning indicate how the natives' life will move at various points of times. There may be good times and bad times in one's life and Astrology is supposed to be used as a tool to indicate and predict the same with reasonable accuracy, so that the natives can use it effectively.

To use Astrology as a predictive tool, one has to understand certain basic factors which are critical for 'reading' of a horoscope. The objective of this book is to list some of them, explain in a lucid manner, how each factor or factors will work. I have tried to make the concepts simpler and easy to understand so that, even a reader who has basic knowledge of astrology can do the predictions. How accurate the predictions will be, however will depend on the understanding of the nuances by the person, who is doing the predictions.

Preface

Astrology is an ancient subject. Reference to astrology is found in Vedas and Puranas including Ramayan and Mahabharata. It is thus clear that it is not an unknown subject that has been developed in recent times but has been in existence from time immemorial.

When we read Epics like Ramayan and Mahabharata, we can note some of the modern day technological innovations finding mention there in some form or the other. How was this possible? For instance after defeating Ravan, Ram along with Sita and Lakshman arrived in Ayodhya in a 'Pushpaka Viman' which is equivalent to our current day aircraft. In Mahabharata, we have seen how Sanjayan was appraising King Dhritharashtar of all the happenings in the war at Kurukshetra. This is equivalent to our Modern day Live broadcast of events. This means our forefathers had the vision to think about these innovations even in those days. This only establishes the fact that these techniques were either available in those days in some form or the other or our ancestors had the capability to visualise these developments through their supernatural powers.

Similar is the evolution and use of astrology in those days which are visible from the references in Epics and Puranas. Even Ravan is said to be an ardent follower of Astrology. If concepts like 'Pushpaka Viman' and Sanjayan's vision of Kurukshetra happenings have been converted into modern day scientific and technological innovations, like aircraft and Live TV broadcast, why not astrology be believed and equated with Science? My answer is it should be. Inspite of various controversies as to whether Astrology is a Science or not, I strongly believe that it is a Science, followed from time immemorial, which has deep-rooted presence in our ancient culture, Epics and other Puranas. Astrology being so ancient is a tool to link our current life with past Karmas. For instance, Bhishma was destined to be killed by a woman as per his past Karma which actually happened in Mahabharata. The linkage of Astrology and Karma is what provoked me to write this Book. I started with the basics but the quest to know more about the linkage of astrology with karma made me even more interested.

Whatever happens in one's life in the current birth is linked to Karma. The positioning of planets in one's horoscope is not random but a result of past Karmas. For instance planets based in dusthanas or in debilitation or affliction of fifth house, etc., are as a result of Karma of the native. Hence it is my firm belief that Astrology can help us to understand and evaluate the good and bad things that might happen to us during the life time, based on the planetary combinations and the timings of the same. This is what 'Astrology Predictions' are all about and what is being attempted in the Book.

My approach in this book, is based on my research and examination of a number of horoscopes, listening to scholars in astrology, collating the findings and finalising my own views to make my recommendations, rather than just following the traditional rules, prescribed in Vedic astrology. I sincerely hope Readers will find this Book useful and educative.

This is my second Book on Astrology; the first one was on Marriage Astrology titled 'Matching of Horoscopes for Marriages'. I owe my learnings and interest in Astrology to my late father Sri. H. Bhuthalingam, who was a very well known Astrologer, though a Banker by profession. I learnt the basics of Astrology from him. I hereby dedicate this Book to him.

I am immensely thankful to Sri R Krishnan, CA, who has written the foreword for this book. Sri Krishnan was not only my guru under whom I got trained as a CA but a mentor and well wisher. Whatever I am today is because of his guidance and blessings. I hereby offer my Pranams to him.

Last but not the least, I would not have been able to conceptualise and complete this book without the untainted support and dedication of my wife, Kalpana, who herself is a staunch follower of Astrology. She had also supported me for my first book on astrology, titled 'Matching of horoscopes for marriages.' It is my privilege to inform readers that the Appendix 1 to this book Basics of Astrology' has been compiled by her.

Foreword

The above idea, if followed by mankind, most of the population will be free from all distress and worries, but that is not so with mankind, as each one regrets about one's past deeds, worries about the present one and is anxious about the future.

There is an old culture in Hinduism with thoughts and traditions, which is the great subject of astrology. The subject was brought to us by recognized learning and written manuals by authors who were reputed rishis. The subject is included as a recognized subject of learning and becomes a limb of Vedanga. Whatever may be its status, the subject Astrology plays an important part in the life of the average Hindu. When a baby is born, the horoscope is cast and all the auspicious rites are fixed in relation to the horoscope. Horoscopes are immensely considered while arranging for marriages. In each man's life, there are ups and downs and the horoscope is consulted to find out good and bad periods in one's life and the nature of "pariharams" to be performed to mitigate the impact of adversity. Shri B. HARIHARAN, good student of mine, did his articleship and became a chartered accountant. He rose very high in his life and became a top executive in a reputed concern. He has now come out with an enormous book titled "COMPENDIUM OF PREDICTIVE ASTROLOGY" This book runs up to nearly 350 pages, containing 12 chapters and covers the entire aspects of astrology. He comes from a family of astrologers, especially his grandfather, Adv. Late HARIHARA IYER, his father Late H. BHUTHALINGAM, an officer of the State Bank of Travancore. I have associated with the family and have close relationship with them. Many predictions, made by Shri H. Bhuthalingam, have come out precisely and distinctly. A word used to go around in his office, that whenever the staff were unable to tally the figures, they approached Shri H. Bhuthalingam, who used to predict the page in which the mistake occured. Apart from the knowledge of planetary positions and aspects, one should have intuitive power to foresee things. The story also went round that Hariharan's grandfather predicted the arrival of a long-lost relative on a particular day driven in bullock cart. The parents of the long-lost relative were immensely overjoyed and showered all praise on the astrologer. Yet another incident is about a lady who came to see H. Bhuthalingam, full of tears, sobbing about the loss of a gold ring. Through his prasnamarga, Bhuthalingam told the ring was not lost but was only in her house and that an intensive search should reveal the position. The lady, after extensive search, found the lost ring in her house itself. Shri Bhuthalingam, father of B. Hariharan, gave solace and comfort to me whenever I was in distress situation. Shri. Hariharan's book is well-written and those who are interested in the science will be greatly rewarded. I appreciate his efforts in bringing out such a compendium of book which will be greatly applauded and even for the layman, it should be a great guide. May God bless Mr. B. Hariharan (along with his wife, Kalpana) who has taken great efforts to bring out such a book. Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Hariharan.
