The gratitude to my supervising teacher and friendly guide Dr. C. M. Neelakandhan for his learned counsel is gratefully acknowledged and recorded. My twenty year long association with Dr. K. G. Paulose, the scholar, teacher and former Vice-Chancellor, and his words and works initiated me to the wonderful world of Kutiyattam. His advice and dedication prompted me to complete this work. I am much indebted to him for sparing his valuable time and providing relevant materials for the research work. Similarly I was fortunate to have close contact with performers like Smt. Usha Nangiar, Margi Madhu and Kalamandalam Krishnakumar all of whom aroused my interest in the theatrical forms especially Kutiyattam. I could watch the performance of many Sanskrit dramas in Katiyattam format. With a desire to know better, I held discussions with the artists, scholars and interviewed some performers, including Sri. Ramesh Varma. Dr. K. N. Panikkar gave a new insight on culture and Jurisprudence. In addition actors like Bharat Murali and Prof. Narendra Prasad who made a name in films gage inspiration to me for having a better understanding of the theatre, as an indicator of cultural traditions. I feel their absence. It is this kind of first hand experience that prompted me to pen these lines. Among those who inspired me on the jurisprudence of culture, include Kutiyattam artists, Kutiyattam institutions and international scholars who showed great interest in this theatrical form. Sri. Radhakrishnan N. K, Assistant Registrar of Kalamandalam, helped me a lot in this endeavor. I am thankful to all of them. Last, but not least, I must record my indebtedness and gratitude to my beloved mentor Dr. N.P. Unni for rendering all help, inleuding in the publication of the precent volume.
