Bengal, which is the eastern part of India, has always been a centre of Socio-political and cultural movements. When political power penetrated into Eastern India including Bengal towards the beginning of the 13th century A.D., the Muslim. kingdom was established in Bengal with Lakhanauti (Gaur) as capital by Muhammad Bakhtyar Khiliji in the early part of 1205 A.D. Since then the Muslim power extended to other parts ultimately covering the whole of Bengal. Therefore Bengal remained under the Muslim rule till the English East India Company established its authority, in the latter half of the 18th century. In 1947 India achieved independence as two separate states, India and Pakistan, the latter comprising of certain portion of Western India designated as West Pakistan and the major eastern portion of Bengal known as East Pakistan. East Pakistan is now separated from Pakistan and the sovereign state of Bangladesh has been created in 1971.
