It is well identified that the territory of Mithila has an unique culture. While on one hand its land is constituted of young river- alluvium, immensely fertile, the people particularly in two castes (Brahmin and Kayastha ) are potentially very intelligent as observed by many social scientists.

Since ancient time the region has got specific mention in history and literature. The famous epic Ramayana describes the glory of Mithila. The goddess of wealth; Lakshmi- Janki was born here. Lord Shiva in form of "Ugna" served his master Vidyapati .Thus the cultural milieu of Mithila Region has no parallel. Even today two schools of thought Varanasi and Mithila determine the code of conduct of people.

The author has discussed the traits of Mithila Culture; food, festivity, music. fine arts and many rituals. The Cultural growth has been divided into three periods. They are (1) before 600 AD (11) 600 to 1800 AD (III) 1801 AD onwards. In ancient time the cultural ethos remained static for long. The cultural traits developed and took a strong hold in social life. The worship of 'five -gods', the social caste codification thread ceremony, etc. drove the life of people.

The advent of modern time has brought much changes. The cul tural traits are transmitted very fast. One can observe these transformations particularly in dress, habitat,food and in ceremonial functions. The traditional bonds of caste codification are vanishing The modern appliances have created a gamut of cultural mix almost everywhere. One can see such a dynamic cultural mosaic in the Mithila region.

The book will level uneven surface to great extent.
