The book you hold in your hands is an unpreten- tious guide to India's political and, dare we say. cultural capital- its bazaars. restaurants, malls. monuments, museums. recreational centres, the many cities within the city, its big shopping cen- tres, its thriving nightlife, and just about anything you might want from a city guide, whether you live here or are just passing through. It's our sin- cerest hope that even those who know Delhi inti- mately will make a few discoveries in these pages, and those sojourning will find an enlightening companion to help them get their first taste of this vibrant world city.
Delhi revels in its centuries-old history, it dances to the heartbeats of its 15 million residents. and yet is keenly aware of the place it occupies as the capital of a nation in flux - an aspiring superpower still battling with holes like poverty, inequality or cor- ruption in its narrative. As its citizens. we are stake- holders in its history-soaked past, its dynamic pres- ent and promising future, and we feel privileged to bring you this book.
A note of caution: in putting together the book. we have been overtaken by certain unpredictable events. For the 2010 Commonwealth Games the city was overtaken by construction, road digging, laying of phone lines and much else. Many shops and establishments also took the opportunity to reinvent themselves. The city emerged much changed and continues to change. Please bear with us if you find a few "omissions"; we'll most certainly catch up with these in the next edition. And do let us know if you found the book engag- ing and useful. Your feedback will help us make further refinements.
