Reading in the words of CS Bhandari, is a specific skill, "It does not come automatically with the ability to speak but has to be learnt carefully and methodologically." Reading is an ability to interpret linguistic sounds. It is one of the linguistic skills we aim to imbibe in the students of English at various schools levels. It is a means of communications in which printed symbols are used to convey the thoughts of a writer. The real purpose of reading is to get meaning. It is not a mastery of a body of skills. It is an interpretation of experiences designed to help round out the development of a child and an adult. Reading is one of the most useful skills in learning a foreign language. It opens the gateway to the unbounded field of knowledge. It helps us get over time and space and brings us the company of great thinkers, philosophers, scientist and statesmen of bygones eras whose thoughts are available to the posterity by recording them in some codes of languages in the forms of symbols which portray the object they stand for. It is a form of experience but it is not necessarily empirical. As a matter of fact, reading helps us cross the hand of the direct experience and put us face to face with the past in a resurrected, legible, unbiased recorded form. By its very nature and the promises that it holds for the mankind, reading is the best form of leisure, though not entirely restricted to it. It promotes self-education and is not restricted merely to formal teaching - learning. Reading is an intellectual activity that encompasses life in its variety, depth and sublimit, and brings happiness, vision and satisfaction to the ardent reader.
