Foreward

The Volume titled ‘’Development, Displacement And Marginalisation’’ contains selected papers presented in a seminar organised by the Asiatic Society during March 8th to 10th, 2007. In her editorial note Professor Ranjana Ray has rightly pointed out that the process of 'marginalisation is not new in human history". The process has been going on for ages in varying degrees in all civilisations of the world. However, in recent times in a developing country like ours, it has taken a serious turn and the problem has further been accentuated because of population explosion.

The seminar focussed on a number of related issues on marginalisation viz., development, displacement, women and children, disability and ageing, cultural identity and poverty. These are very important and topical issues in the context of our country. I hope the volume would be well appreciated and useful to the scholars and researchers in the field.

Introduction

is rather difficult to define the term marginalisation in its full context. With globalisation the term has gained more of economic importance. Several scholars have given various definitions. Usually there is a trend within the societies to attribute this term to those who are lacking in desirable traits or are deviating from the group norms and are excluded by the wider group within the society and are ostracised. Others have defined marginal as those who live on the margin of two cultures with unresolved identity crises. With colonialism, modernisation, technological development and globalisation, the concept of marginalisation has taken a complete new dimension. At present the contexts are interrelated. Development, displacement and marginalisation are intrinsically connected to each other. At the same time identity crisis arising out of several factors are also playing an important role in marginalisation.
