Prologue

I am an orphan girl. While growing in an orphanage, a lot of sorrow and pain came my way, but there were also moments of happiness. This is a small attempt to string together these moments of pain and happiness, and present to you. Really speaking, there might be many more girls like me who have grown in orphanages, who might have borne hardships worse and more than I did. Even today, many are living that life. I have only attempted to be their representative voice.

Just as the five fingers of a hand are not alike, so is the case of people you meet. Living in the society, out of all the people 1 met, some were of the worse kind. I tried to stay at an arm's length from them but if I hadn't met them, I probably wouldn't have been able to distinguish between good and evil. Rather, in my case the good people have always judged and found me good. The education and love given to me at my various ages and stages. by Dr. Gajanan Gaikwad, Annasaheb Sahasrabuddhe and Mama Kshirsagar of Acharyakul, are my victuals, which I find very useful in the scuffles of life even today.

Only those who understand, what the children without parents go through, will understand the importance of these people. The boundless love of the Superintendent of Remand Home Shri Karve, Mrs. Dalvi and Mrs. Deshmane, made them the guardians of orphans, which me and my siblings practically were. Also, the affection of Rashtra Seva Dal chief Shri Shyamrao Patwardhan, S.M. Anna, Nana Vele, Dada Dharmadhikari, Baba Redikar. Nana Dengle, Shantabai Pitale, Dr. Mahadeo Yadav as well as Bhidetai and Shardabai, is the real wealth that I have today. I dared to write this book because of a lot of friends who coaxed me into it. Basically, I was doubtful whether I would be able to write anything but as I wrote, gradually I grew in confidence.

Shri Yadunath Thatte of the Rashtra Seva Dal and Sadhana (a Marathi periodical) family explained to me a few things. He said, "Look, an eagle soars high into the skies, but that doesn't mean that a little sparrow should never take her small leap."

This advice by Yadunathji and the constant push of my husband Mahavir Jondhale to complete the writing work is what made this book possible. Shri Baba Bhand and Ashatai of Saket Publication decided to publish the first Marathi edition this book out of their affectionate friendship with me and I am grateful to them for that.

This book was published in Marathi without much promotion. However, people liked it, critics accepted it and book lovers adored it. Its recommendation for an award in Creative Literature category was widely lauded. The great Marathi litterateur late Smt Durga Bhagwat had included the book in her 100 most liked books. This is the greatest honour of all!

Even today, when I get letters from readers, I feel motivated to write more. I am not one to believe that a book is great only if it gets some award, if it happens as a matter of course, one can definitely enjoy that. The real test of a good book is how much the readers like it.
