It gives me s a great pleasure to write a few lines on the attempt of Dr. Gurpreet Kaur on the life and work of Dr. Lakmani Mishra whose memorable contribution to the field of music is not widely known.

Dr. Mishra, a soft spoken person, a great scholar and a performer was adverse to publicity and commercial success. Even his closed friends were not aware of his multi-faceted personality. At Benaras Hindu University (Varanasi) he not only worked hard to build the music faculty but also make it widely known to the rest of the world.

As an administrator, author, performer, Guru and as a perfect human being, Lalmaniji has respectable position in the domain of Indian Music.

In this book Dr. Gurpreet has not only paid a glowing tribute to Dr. Mishra and his work but also she has been courageous enough to critically analyze the positive and other aspects of his life and contribution.

This work is culmination of the research work done by Gurpreet who has done an exhaustive study on the life of Dr. Mishraji.

Dr. Lalmani Mishra’s book Bhartiye Sangeet Vadye is a landmark in the history of Indian Music. This Book is a must for any library, music schools, students and scholars. This book is a great help for any research scholars. He was not only an author and musicologist but also a great performer of ‘Vichitra Veena’. His untimely death was a great blow to the music world.

I know Dr. Gurpreet Kaur since she was working on the project for her Ph.D thesis under the guidance of professor (Dr. ) Indrani Chakravarty when she was the Dean at the Music Faculty at H.P. University, Shimla, As an ardent student of Music Gurpreet has come a long way. Her work would be a stepping stone for the serious research scholars of Music. I wish her all good luck for the success of this publication.
