As the title of the book suggests it is a comprehensive study of the most ancient Sanskrit playwright, Bhasa's dramaturgy, on the basis of the data collected from the works of the emi- nent Sanskrit scholars viz. Prof. G.K. Bhat, Shri A.D. Pusalker, Shri V. Venkatachalam, Shri A.S.P. Ayyar and many others which is divided into two volumes. The first volume deals with the textual analysis of the plays as- cribed to Bhasa on the basis of, 'San- skrit Dramatic Theory' comprising of नान्दी - स्थापना- भरतवाक्य, इतिवृत्त वस्तु, अंक - विधान, अर्थोपक्षेपक, कार्यावस्था, अर्थप्रकृति, सन्धि सन्ध्यन्तर सन्ध्यङ्ग, पताकास्थानक, नाट्योक्ति, रूपक-प्रकार, नायक-नायिका भेद and रसनिरूपण while the second volume deals with the textual analysis on the basis of, 'Western Dramatic Theory' consist- ing of Dramatic Theme, Plot Develop- ment, Dialogues-Verses-Narrations, Characters and Characterization, Tragedy and Tragic Hero as well as Parallels in the Western Drama; which would be helpful to the students and Ph.D. scholars of Bhasa's Dramatic Literature.
Mahesh Champaklal-Professor Emeritus and former Head, Deptt. of Dramatics and also ex-Dean, Faculty of Performing Arts, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Was associated with the Professional Gujarati Theatre in Mumbai from 1973 to 1981. Actively contributed and par- ticipated in Experimental Theatre of Gujarat as writer, actor and director from 1982 onwards. Conferred upon Gaurav Puraskar by Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Akademi, and felicitated with Best Translation Award by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi and Gujarat Sahitya Akademi, Gandhinagar for the Gujarati Translation of Girish Karnard's The Fire and the Rain. Re- searched, authored and published four books in Gujarati on Bharata's Natyashastra and also four books in Gujarati on theatre criticism which were acknowledged and awarded by Gujarati Sahitya Parishad and Gujarat Sahitya Akademi. Honored with fellow- ship at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study-IIAS, Shimla and also with Senior Fellowship, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India. Recepeint of Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi, Award for the contri- bution to the field of Theatre Scholar- ship. At present working as the Tagore Fellow at the Indian Institute of Ad- vanced Study, Shimla.
