While prefacing these lines, the poignant memory of late Prof. Radhe Krishna Chaudhary flashes in my mind. It was under his inspiring guidance, I started my enquiry on the early medieval sculp- ture of Eastern Bihar. Hailing from this area and his subsequent teach- ing assignments in Begusarai, Bhagalpur and Kahalgaon from time to time, he had an encyclopedic knowledge about art, history and archaeology of eastern Bihar. It was because of his maiden effort, that the history of Ariguttarapa i.e., the northern part of Ariga the main area of our enquiry was resurrected. His untiring endeavour led to the discovery of many pieces of valuable sculptures, coins, inscrip- tions and others antiquities (in Begusarai) which he subsequently donated in the G. D. College Museum, Begusarai. It is he who largely conceived the main line of our enquiry. If any success has been re- corded in these pages, it is the outcome of the sagacious strategy outlined by him. With a sense of deep gratitude, I have dedicated this book to him.
