The subject of social stratification or social hierarchy virtually leading to the question of social inequality has been a major academic concern for the researchers all over the globe since very long. In India this very study en- gaged the minds of not only the formal scholars but also of the social thinkers, littérateurs, social activists, planners and administrators since independence. Various categories of socio-economic population groups are in use in academic discourses such as Caste, Class, Status group, Other Backward Class, Dalit and so on and so forth. Apart from some discrete writings on the subject in various forms, the scholars of social sciences have seriously examined various historic-textual contexts, politico-economic inputs and religious scripts for writing their valuable papers/ books.
Professor Suvira Jaiswal, an eminent scholar of His- tory, Formerly Professor of Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, submitted the present manuscript as 'Dr. Bimanbehari Mazumdar Memorial Lecture, 2017' on 7th September, 2018 on the topic "Emergence of Castes and Outcastes: Historical Roots of the 'Dalit' Problem", which is being published now. She has examined here the question of emergence of Castes and Outcastes keeping a focus on the historical roots of the Dalit problem. Research Scholars on the subject will be, I believe, benefited immensely from this publication.
