Emotional quotient is the very basis of our existence. This statement is inscrutable in today’s world. In fact the current Darwinian Theory could be: ‘Survival of the emotionally fittest.’ Emotions play havoc in our day to day lives and enslave us completely. Some are imprisoned in the four walls of depression while some are inflamed by their own temper. Some are controlled totally by their impulses while some are shackled tight to their fears. Each one of us is dominated by one emotion or the other.
Take this journey to master each emotion, one at a time, with the help of guided and focused meditation and emerge as an everlasting joyous soul.
Shruti Kakkar is a full-time homemaker, a doting wife. hands-on mother of two, and a loving and caring daughter-in-law. She left her job as an advertising professional after marriage as she believes in giving her 100% to whatever she chooses to take up in life. Many may wonder as to why I have named my book as 'Emotions @ Meditation'. What does it signify? 'At the rate of' basically means the address or home for your identity or expressing relationship between a part and a whole.
Similarly, I am hoping that we will all make meditation the safe home or the peaceful abode for our emotions. Let us house our emotions in the strong room of mediation and let them out in optimum measure.
There are people who have glaring problems which everyone around can witness, hence they are sympathized and empathized with. But there are others who face mental stress on a regular basis which only the sufferer can understand and feel, while from a distance his/her life looks like the perfect one.
I belonged to the second category. A few years back i was diagnosed with clinical depression. Probably I was emotionally weak and didn't have enough stability of mind to steer clear of the situation. Of course, this kind of mental ailments are physiological too, but they come to surface only due to certain triggers and that is where the catch is. These triggers, in various shapes and forms will be all around us till the end of times. It is how we go through them remaining unscathed, that makes all the difference.
I have been a practicing psychiatrist for nearly 45 years and have always been dismayed by an almost total dependence on medications when it comes to dealing with different psychiatric syndromes. Most of our patients present with intense inter-personal difficulties and intra-personal conflicts which inevitably require a different approach; psychopharmacology is helpful in dealing with illnesses but it does not provide answers to the inter-personal difficulties and intra-personal conflicts that play a part in their genesis and propagation and have a crucial bearing on the ultimate prognosis.
Therefore I am delighted that a volume on the topic has been written. Shruti deals with the complex issue from the perspective of a professional as well as someone who has had to battle with clinical depression. She is to be applauded for being candid about her own personal travails.
She has had a lot of experience in this area and it comes through very clearly in her very lucid prose. The book is an unputdownable read and I am very confident that it would be immensely helpful not just to the professionals but also to the general population at large equipping them with the very important skill which would enable them to maintain a steady equilibrium in their mental states.
