Surya is a word which I revere and hold very close my heart to Surya Mahila Koshang was established in Gaya on 8 October 2002, under the able guidance of the then district magistrate, Mr Brijesh Mehrotra. It was in all probability, the first helpline for women to deal with problems of domestic violence and marital disputes, in Bihar or probably in India. I was working as a counsellor with the Koshang and felt an immense satisfaction in dealing with the cases brought to this helpline. It was like peeping into the hidden corners of the life of every woman who felt helpless and sad, and had nowhere to go. The guidance and constant encouragement of the then district magistrate aided in taking the Koshang to a great height within a short time. The helpline was able to deal with more than 1,000 cases successfully within a year. It was able to shake up the very morality of the people of this sacred holy town, Gaya. Through this helpline, the influential people of Gaya, various organisations of the state, the local police administration, and the municipal corporation worked in a fabulously coordinated manner to accord women their prestigious position.
The Koshang was set up under the aegis of Mahila Samakhya, Bihar Education Project, and DIET Gaya. The then commissioner, Mr H C Sirohi, DIG Mr Dhondiyal and SP Mr Ravindra Shankaran provided constant help whenever needed. The working of the Koshang showed how various administrative officials could work together to bring about a positive change in the lives of women.
