We are thankful to the Department of Education, Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India for financially assisting the Sanskrit Sahitya Parishat, Kolkata, to organise a two-day National Seminar on Science and Technology in Ancient India. The Seminar was inaugurated by Professor Ramaranjan Mukherjee, the President of the Parishat, and Dr Pratap Chandra Chunder, Formerly Education Minister, Govt. of India acted as the Chief Guest in the Inaugural Session. Twelve scholars from various Academic Centres presented their learned papers in the two-day Seminar. The papers are related to Architecture, Mining, Medical sciences, Botany, and allied fields of knowledge. These topics come within the purview of Technical Literature in the field of which our ancient sages developed much. Unfortunately, not many of the present-day Indologists give enough attention to this specialised branch of our ancient literature. Hence the Parishat came forward to organise the Seminar on the fields of technical and scientific thoughts of early India. Hope, the present book containing the articles read by the learned scholars in the Seminar will come to the help of the students and teachers of Indology.
I express my gratitude for the help rendered by Prof. Satya Ranjan Banerjee, Prof. Ratna Basu, Prof. Karunasindhu Das, Prof. Dhirendranath Banerjee, Prof. Santinath Ghosh, Prof. Ruma Bandhyopadhyay, Sri Sanjay Chakravarty, Pandit Madhusudan Vedantasastri, and Pandit Baidyanath Chatterjee Kavya-Smrtitirtha, but for whose active assistance the Seminar could not be organised. I am indebted to our students Sm. Reeta Bhattacharya, Sm. Sumita Chatterjee, Sm. Somasree Roy Chaudhury and Sm. Bedabani Mukherjee for helping me in going through the proofs of this volume. Thanks are due to Sri Debasish Bhattacharya of the Sanskrit Pustak Bhandar for undertaking the burden of the publication of the book.
