Arunachal Pradesh is the land where sun-ray kisses India earliest. It is the land which was earlier known as NEFA, is the home of a number of tribes of Tibeto-Burman Origin. The book is a compilation of fables and folk tales of various tribes. These stories are born from the soil and on the basis of various ethnic influences. The book is expected to help various research scholars for their further studies. It is also expected that the stories shall entertain all old and young alike.
G. K. GHOSH, a graduate in Chemical Engineering is a prolific writer who wrote over 15 books on environment, anthropology, women development, literature, beekeeping and so on. He had presented over 20 papers in the section of anthropology and archeology in Indian Science Congress. He had also written articles, poems etc., in Oriya, Bengali and English published in various periodicals. He was posted for over four years in North Eastern India therefor he could collect a number of folk tales of the region.
SHUKLA GHOSH, a graduate from University of Calcutta and a graduate in Music from Prayag Sangit Samaj, is a prolific writer who presented four papers in the section of anthropology and archeology in Indian Science Congress. A book on Indian textile jointly written by her published recently. She was in North Eastern India for over four years and collected a number of folk tales which she proposes to publish in series.
Arunachal Pradesh till few decades back was known as North Eastern Frontier Agency is the home of a number of tribes. The state may be termed as the land of sunrise since it is in this part of India that the first ray of Sun kisses Indian soil. Often referred as mystic land due to various mystic cults that dominate the life of people.
The state may be divided into three parts according to faith and religious beliefs. The western Arunachal Pradesh is dominated by the Buddhist culture of Mahayana cult influenced by Tibet. The Central Arunachal Pradesh have their own cult called Dono-Polo based on nature worship although some influence of Buddhism cannot be totally ruled out. The Eastern Arunachal Pradesh have three different cults. One group of tribes believe in Buddism of Hinayana cult. The second group have the faith of nature worship while a few others believe in Vaisnavism of Sankardeva school due to influence of Assam. But it is said both Buddhists as well as Vaisnavs had their own cult of nature worship prior to conversation during different parts of history.
The folk tales of all these tribes had the influences of various cults. Many of the folk tales were actually historical facts which could not be documented as history due to absence of scripts but became the part of folk literature.
Folk literature of any country or region is always considered as the father of organised literature, since it was those folk literature or myths that gave the foundation of future literary growth. Arunachal Pradesh is no exception. Many of the folk tales could become part of mythology hence are considered as sacred. Many of these folk tales also gives us idea about the society of various tribes during different parts of history.
Attempts are made here to collect and compile various folk tales of Arunachal Pradesh with the purpose for researchers to study, to give pleasure to Children as well as adults alike. Many are recorded here while many are left out. Many folk tales might have lost forever. Yet attempt to compile here may serve various purpose including preventing them to evaporate.
