The classical texts of Ayurveda contain an elaborate des cription of the diagnostic methods as envisaged by our ancient Acharyas. These descriptions are subjective as well as obje ctive; they are the concepts and principles to be applied to understand the disease and the diseased; they are the broad generalisations and classifications. Today, these descriptions require to be interpreted and explained in such a way that the post-graduates and the research workers may be benefitted in learning the most scientific wisdom behind these sutras.

Shri Shiva Charan Dhyani, Reader of the Post-graduate Section of our University, has very nicely explained the scien tific meanings of 'Nidana Pañcaka' in this valuable publication. He has raised many interesting questions about the practical application of the five principles of diagnosis and has also furnished answers to them alongwith many practical prepositions to be worked out by those, who are interested in exploring the hidden treasure of Ayurveda. His original ideas supported by Ayrvedic principles about the Disease and it's phases, the actio-pathogenesis in relation to the symptomato logy of a disease, are worthy of appreciation. I congratulate the writer for his best piece of work embodied in this book 'Nidana Pañcaka'.

I am glad to place this book in the hands of the scholars, teachers and students of Ayurveda.
