The book seeks to ensure food and nutrition security for 1.2 billion plus people in India on the strength of self sufficiency of its food production including foodgrains, fruits and vegetables, milk, poultry products, meat and fish etc. It suggests convincingly for removal of hunger and poverty from within the subcontinent by adopting modern science based technologies, rational and scientific utilization of natural resources and their conservation and preservation of ecosystem. It also refers to proper utilization of new opportunities in domestic and international trade and creating a favourable climate for increased investment by public and private sectors in agriculture and rural sectors from where majority of Indian households earn their livelihood. Suresh C. Modgal is an Agronomist by training (M.Sc. [Agric.], Ph.D) and has been a researcher and professor by profession. He has served the State Agricultural Universities at Pantnagar (then in Uttar Pradesh, now in Uttrakhand, India) and Palampur (Himachal Pradesh, India). Author served as Vice-Chancellor of the G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar from 1993-1997 and later as Director General of Uttar Pradesh Council of Agricultural Research at Lucknow (India) between 1997 and 2001. He has worked as collaborating Scientist at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines and a Visiting Scientist at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Nigeria. He has been a consultant to the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations Organisation, UNDP/World Bank and others.
