A Forgotten Culture is an English translation of M.M. Gurung's Sahitya Akademi award-winning Nepali collection of essays, Birsiyeko Sanksriti. M.M. Gurung through these essays, aimed to revive the vanishing Nepali folk culture. It is a pioneering effort in preserving Nepali oral literary tradition in a simple and engrossing style. His book is of utmost importance to researchers and students. Gurung's language and style are simple, easy and refined. Gurung's this book re-connects Nepalis, living abroad who had lost touch with their roots, with their original culture.
M.M. Gurung (Martin Michael Gurung) (1926-2014) was on author of short stories, folk songs, scholar in Nepali culture, Nepali critic, who was born in Darjeeling. Along with being a prominent littérateur, M.M Gurung was also a staunch upholder of traditional values. "Neta" (The Leader) was his first article, published in Udaya, a Nepali Journal from Varanasi. Some of his widely acclaimed poems "Kakakuli Karayo", "Hey Sapana Ki Pari", "Falgun Ko Hawa Sita" have been published in Bharati. Ghar Sansar is a collection of his short stories. His much-talked- about collection of short stories Teesta Bagchha Sadhai Jasto was published by Nepali Sahitya Praishad, Darjeeling in 1982. Besides a number of translation works has been done by him and published in various Nepali and English Magazines. He was the recipient of Bhanu Puraskar and Diyalo Dulichand Gold Award.
