Professor Archana Sharma, affectionately addressed "Didi" by her students was a human compendium of sundry noble attributes and virtues that made her an outstanding Professor, effective administrator and a venerated individual Professor Sharma, through the Department of Botany. University of Calcutta, enabled her students and advisees to have a fruitful and very enduring academic training and constructive research in the sphere of Botany, concentrating particularly in Genetics.
Professor Sharma's professional contributions straddled the twin fields of genetics and molecular biology. Topics such as the study of evolution, human genetics, genetic counseling, and genetic toxicology derived comprehensive attention and prolific creation from the very competent and research oriented mind and hands of Professor Archana Sharma. She has provided stellar role in the enrichment and forward march of the disciplines of genetics and molecular biology for the betterment and welfare of society and mankind.
On the occasion of a dedication ceremony of the Seminar Hall of the Centre of Advanced Study, Department of Botany, University of Calcutta, to the Memory of Late Professor (Mrs.) Archana Sharma, in the first quarter of the calendar year 2009 (15 March 2009), the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, Professor Suranjan Das, broached the idea of publishing selected articles from the vast collection of Professor Archana Sharma's authored articles. It was to serve the dual purpose of a memory to her and a recognition of her brilliant contribution to the arena of biological science. Professor Sharma's attachment with the University for the preceding fifty years was also to be acknowledged. We, enthusiastically and wholeheartedly decided to give full effect to the wishes of the respected Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta.
