DakshinaChitra museum is about remembering our roots and celebrating our inner creative strength and spirit. DakshinaChitra recreates the experience of living in the villages of South India by providing visitors with an extraordinary array of visual and tactile encounters. Through historic homes and simple mud houses, DakshinaChitra reminds us of the innovative and resourceful nature of our architectural heritage. Through performing artists and skilled artisans, DakshinaChitra awakens our senses to the rhythms, colours. and shapes of all that is around us. DakshinaChitra is about beauty, tradition, innovation, and the confluence and continuing evolution of our culture.
DakshinaChitra museum is a project of the Madras Craft Foundation, a non-governmental organisation registered in Tamil Nadu in 1984. The success of this project is a result of the dedication and generosity of volunteers, the larger Madras community and our staff. The Madras Craft Foundation would like to thank the corporations, individuals, trusts, and state governments who have helped make DakshinaChitra what it is today. The Madras Craft Foundation would also like to extend its gratitude to The Office of The Development Commissioner Handicrafts, Government of India, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, The Ford Foundation and Government of Tamil Nadu for their generous support.
