A sense of History is the foundation of culture. This little book is for the public and especially the non-academics who may imbibe the appreciation of Indian history and culture by looking at brief glimpses attempted here. These pages are for the lay people who would rather see the flow of history than have their minds cluttered with dates and names of kings and the like. Where we did not find any recorded hero or villain we have invented one to suit the times and our purpose of giving a simple and satisfying sequence of events that are important even now for our own growth and beliefs.
Prof. J. N. Nanda with a string of academic distinctions including two earned doctorates, multitude of national and international awards is a distinguished scientist, thinker and writer. He has represented India abroad many times. He has summarized his all embracing philosophy and religion as New Mahayana which allows all isms to co-exist. Among his scientific contributions, mention can be made of his new understanding of the earth's internal structure, the origin of the moon and the origin of earth's magnetism etc. He has traveled practically in all continents and studied many languages. Besides his scientific books and publications, mention may be made of his book "Science and Technology in India's transformation" released by the President of India at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in 1986. Other important books are "Foreign Policy of Co-existence India", "Religion and Philosophy for Modern Youth", "Co-operative Development of Marine Resources" and "Materials and Environment".
It is difficult to justify the writing of a new book on India's History and Culture. A book of art or poetry needs no justification except the response to the creative urge of the author. The Glimpses of India's History and Culture comes practically in the same category. India's History and culture spans the entire past of human civilized living. Even a mere mention of historical data and scholarly discussion of Indian thinking and Indian arts and sciences would require a full encyclopedia. In this little book we are restricting ourselves to pick up only salient points and discuss important turning points so that the reader gets an understandable over all view of India, and Indians as well as others learn for better future for themselves.
