In the history of mankind, Hadrat Umar occupies a unique position. He is the greatest of all the names that have come in the history as- great conquerors, empire-builders, administrators and statesmen. He established Arabia as world-power. He set standards of republican democratic behaviour which have not been surpassed so far. He was the Head of the largest State of the world, but he lived the life of a common man. His greatness was acknowledged by the Holy Prophet (S.A. W.) when he said that if there were to be any Prophet after him it would have been Hadrat Umar. Verily Hadrat Umar was not a prophet, but he did things which a prophet have done. He was the man of strong character and strong will who made history. It is a matter of great regret that no much authentic books are available in English on him. So the author has ponder over the matter and produced this biography of Hadrat Umar. He analysed all the events in detail and evaluated him with great honour and honesty. Its language is very simple and comprehensive. This book will be useful for the teachers, students and other inquisitive readers.
I have the pleasure to present to my readers this exercise in the shape of "Life of Hadrat Umar Farooq (R. A.). This book seeks to project the life story of Umar the Great (R. A.). About a hundred years ago, Allama Shibli Numani wrote in Urdu a biography of Hadrat Umar (R. A.) under the title "Al-Farooq". The book was translated in English in the fifties of the twentieth century. Since then no remarkable work on the life of Hadrat Umar (R. A.) has appeared in any language of the world. It is surprising that no original work on Hadrat Umar (R. A.) has appeared in English so far. In the annals of mankind, Hadrat Umar (R. A.) occupies a unique position. Human history is studded with the names and exploits of great conquerors, empire-builders, administrators, and statesmen, but Hadrat Umar (R. A.) is the greatest of them all. During the short space of ten years, Hadrat Umar (R. A.) succeeded in building the largest empire in history. Under his leadership the Muslims emerging from the deserts of Arabia overthrew the empire of Persia in the east and shattered the empire of Byzantium in the west. Hadrat Umar (R. A.) set standards of republican and democratic behaviour which have not been surpassed so far. He was the Head of the largest State in the world, and yet he lived the life of a common man. Of simple habits, austere and frugal, he was always accessible to the meanest of his subject, and yet he was cause of terror for the wrong doer. He would wander about at night to enquire into the condition of the people without any guard or escort. He did not live in any palace, and yet the rulers of the day trembled at the very mention of his name. The greatness of Hadrat Umar was acknowledged by the Holy Prophet of Islam (S. A. W.) when he said that if there were to be any Prophet after him it would have been Hadrat Umar (R. A.). Verily Hadrat Umar (R. A.) was not a prophet, but he did things which a prophet would have done. Hadrat Umar (R. A.) is one of those extraordinary personalities who made history. His brilliant conquests, his benevolent administration, his far-reaching reforms, and the integrity of his sterling character mark him as one of the greatest men of all times. In view of the greatness of Hadrat Umar no apology is needed for writing his life story. By undertaking such an exercise we hardly add anything to the greatness of the great man; by recounting some of the prominent features of his greatness we merely seek to inspire ourselves and make our lives sublime. In the case of Hadrat Umar, a matter of regret is that the number of books written so far him is very meagre, and in no way commensurate to his greatness. The Orientalists boast of having produced a number of books on Islam, but they have not produced any book on Hadrat Umar, presumably the greatness of Hadrat Umar has been too dazzling for the western scholars to take notice of. I long pondered over the point as to what was the reason that in spite of the fact that Hadrat Umar (R. A.) was one of the greatest men of all times, no original work in English had been produced about him. Perhaps the western scholarship was in no mood to project his greatness. Presumably they wanted to suppress his greatness. That prompted me to undertake an exercise in writing the life story of Hadrat Umar (R. A.). After working on the project for some three years. I have produced a book on Hadrat Umar
