Women of Karnataka became literate in the vicinity of the twentieth century as a consequence of some social changes. This resulted in an awareness of their unique selves, leading to literary expressions of the written variety. As a consequnce of this phenomenon, many women poetes have flourished during the last eight to nine decades. It is amazing, that poetry has become an alternative mode of expression for them. Their poems swing between the extremes of self-pity and explosive anger. There is a movement from a straight forward presentation of experiences towards a conscious effort to transform them into representations of the 'Women's' World'.
