The village is the most important unit of our socio-economic life which has constituted the primary territorial unit of administration ever since very ancient times. Villages are very frequently referred in ancient Hindu, Buddhist and Jain scripture. Since the very ancient times, the village has been the pivotal of administration and the real centre of socio-economic life around entire structure of local administration revolves with the facility and ease.
The manifold functions of these ancient villages institutions comprise not only the normal civic duties but embraced all conceivable kinds of public affairs-industrial, commercial, social, religious, administrative, judicial and legislative. Their chief social obligation were education, health throughfare, sanitation and many emergency measures during the time of natural calamities.
