Sahitya Akademi intended, form its very beginning to make available to the general as well as to the students of literature standard histories of literature in various languages of india. The present volume belongs to it. The contribution of Assamese known as Pragjyotisa in the epic age to the Indian literature is quite considerable though very little of it is known to non-Assamese reading public. In this volume the history of Assamese literature has been penned with an erudite verve.
Birinchi kumar Barua (1908-1064), a scholar of Pali and Prakit, a Pioneer in research in Indian folklore, a distinguished teacher of comperative literature and above all a creative writer was a combination of multidisciplinary scholarship. He was posthumously honoured with the Sahitya Akademi award for his book Asamar Lok Sanskriti in 1964. Jivanar Batat and Seuji patar Sanskriti are two of his masterpieces in Assamese literature.
