The book traces the history of education in India since Vedic, Post-Vedic and Buddhist period to the Islamic, the British period and the modern times. It describes in detail the activities and recommendations of various Educational Committees and Commissions. The proceedings of important seminars on education are narrated. The book describes the growth of education in India phase-wise: 1835-1853; 1854-1882; 1882-1900; 1900-1920; 1921-1937; 1921- 1947; and in the present times. It discusses the progress and problems of education in Primary and Basic, Secondary and Higher education and also suggests remedies. Based on government reports and important publications, this book has been planned as an ideal textbook on the subject for students of all the Indian universities.

Ram Nath Sharma, M.A., D.Phil. D. Litt, has been President: U.P. Philosophers Association for a decade; LMI: Indian Philosophical Association and Darshan Parishad; Director: Sri Aurobindo Research Institute; Chief Editor: Research Journal of Philosophy and Social Science; Head of the Department of PG. Studies and Research at Meerut College for two decades. He has guided more than two dozen Ph.D. scholars. Dr. Sharma has authored more than one hundred research papers and an equal number of books in: the field of Education and Psychology.

Rajendra Kumar Sharma is M.A., M.Phil. Ph.D., U.G.C. Research Fellow, Punjab University, Chandigarh (1985-1988), and has worked on I.C.S.S.R. Sponsored Project (1987)— ‘Overseas Indian Entrepreneurs in Kenya. He is LMI: Indian. Sociological Society, Uttar Pradesh Samaj Shastra Parishad, Indian Research Association, U.P. Darshan Parishad. He taught at N.A.S. PG. College, Meerut (1987-1991). At present he is Lecturer at N.R.E.C. (PG) College, Ch. Charan. Singh University.
