As indicated by Dr. Yazdani in his preface to the "Early History of the Deccan", the scheme of a comprehensive history of the Deccan emanated from the Department of History of the Osmania University. The original scheme was for the history of the Deccan in five volumes, but it was soon found that each of the three periods, Ancient (up to cir. 1295), Medieval (cir. 1295-1724), and Modern (1724 onwards) necessitated two volumes each. In the note Prof. H. K. Sherwani, the Head of the Department, submitted to H. E. H. the Nizam's Government on 17th July 1941, he said:
"If we wish to determine the salient features of our cultural heritage and evaluate the contribution the Deccan has made to the cumulative culture of India it is necessary that the material at our disposal be thoroughly sifted and collated in a scientific manner."
