As far back as 1938 I was working at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune, on the Descriptive Catalogue of Sanskrit Manuscripts existing there in the Government Manuscripts Library. During the course of my study of the MSS. on 'Sanskrit Lexicons' it occurred to me that very little information pertaining to the Sanskrit Lexicons and their authors was available in print. In order to remove this deficiency, at least partially, I undertook the study thereof from chronological point of view. This study was later developed into a thesis, which was accepted for the degree of Ph.D. by the University of Bombay. I am greatly indebted to Dr. S.M. Katre, the then Director of the Deccan College Post-graduate and Research Institute, Pune, for his valuable guidance and suggestions in the preparation of the said work.
