The North-Eastern region of India is prone to natural calamities like floods, and therefore, uses building construction techniques which are resilient to disasters. One of the most common types of traditional housing practices found in this part of the country are the Ikra houses, predominantly found in the state of Assam. The houses are built on raised platforms to protect the house from flooding usually caused by the river Brahmaputra. This type of construction use lightweight materials such as bamboo, Ikra-a locally available reed and wood which prove to be extremely effective against earthquakes and flooding.
