I used to read the Bhagavad Gita now and then in my youth, and it was very interesting to read about the soul and spirit:
"Never the spirit was born; the spirit shall cease to be never, Never was time it was not; End and Beginning are dreams!
Birthless and deathless and changeless remaineth the spirit forever, Death hath not touched it at all, dead though the house of it seems!
"I say to thee weapons reach not the Life;
Flame burns it not, waters cannot o'erwhelm,
Nor dry winds wither it. Impenetrable,
Unentered, unassailed, unharmed, untouched,
Immortal, all-arriving, stable, sure,
Invisible, ineffable, by word
And thought uncompassed, ever all itself,
Thus is the Soul declared!"
These words made me wonder and ponder on the reality of the soul: What is in existence that will exist forever? What is in existence that no weapon can wreck, fire cannot consume, water cannot moisten, wind cannot wither, the eyes cannot see, the tongue cannot taste, the hand cannot touch, the nose cannot smell, and the ears cannot hear? Many more questions came to mind. A time came to make a conclusion. As a student of science, I wanted to have a scientific answer to these questions. Finally, I came up with an answer that 'the soul is a kind of power'. It did answer most of these questions. Power cannot be created nor can be destroyed; it can only be transferred from one form to another form. So my conclusion was: The soul is a kind of power which has all the senses, the ability of movement, and its own individuality.
