Our society appears to be out of joint today. The gap between those who design and execute the paradigm and projects of 'development' both at macro and micro levels and the mass of people living at the grassroots level seems to be widening in a way that, on the one hand, perhaps, gives rise to a sense of desparation and privation among the latter, and, on the other affects the vision of the former regarding the present and future of the poor, poverty and inequality. The forces of fundamentalism tend to undermine the tradition of syncretism. The 'postmodern' wave seems to be making inroads into our society that contributes to the economic and political imbalance between different historical stages of social formation existing side by side a great deal. The pressure of globalization, privatization, liberalization, the mounting power of market, etc, all directly or indirectly create conditions which are too serious to remain unnoticed; in fact, the intellectuals have remained alert to these and have been reflecting time and again on the crucial issues of poverty, inequality, role and functions of state, religion, culture, values, language / dialect, etc., in the era of the twentyfirst century. The present volume includes the critical discussion and analyses of some of these issues by eminent scholars of different disciplines such as economics, sociology, anthropology, history, literature and linguistics.
