The theory of the Aryan invasion of India was invented in support of the Western imperialism both political and cultural. The Western imperialists made us think that the Rig Veda is the work of barbaric invading horde and consequently there is no culture and civilization in the Rigveda and the Christian missionaries got an excuse to show that Vedic culture came from Middle Eastern culture, the cradle of the Bible and Christianity, showing that Hinduism or Vedic religion is an offshoot of the religion and civilization of the West. The showing of the primitive nature of the Vedic allowed the sciences of India to be given a Greek basis.
This approach also discredited the genealogy of the Puranas and the long list of Kings before the Buddha and Krishna, as having no historical basis. Hindu-Buddhist tradition and culture have been shown containing simply fantasies and myths. Thus it paved the way for cultural, social and political domination of India with the superiority of Western culture and religion gaining an upper hand.
Thus, this approach made the Hindus feel ashamed of their culture as having no scientific and historical basis. The Western Missionary scholars did in the intellectual sphere what the British army did in the political realm, discrediting, dividing and conquering the Hindus. Yet, this has been less questioned by the Hindus even after fifty years of India's independence. Taking a stand against this biased interpretation, would cause a re- examination of many of the historical ideas about India which fail to withstand an objective scrutiny. Most of the Hindu scholars continue to accept passively the misinterpretation of their own culturel and history. They take all these things lightly, perhaps failing to realize that a historically defined culture creates the perspective from which it is viewed in the modern social and intellectual context. These Hindu scholars are proud of 'Tolerance' which does not mean allowing a false view to reign causing much injury to India's health. They take less interest in what India's great seers have said, as guided they are by the Western, Christian scholars in particular.
This explains why most of the English educated students, intellectuals, pressmen and media persons are Hindu- haters. One person wrote in the H.T.: "Hinduism is a menace to liberty, equality and fraternity. Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, a low caste Mahar from Western Indian State of Maharasthra, embarked on National Politics and the Dalits of India found a role model whom they could trust and follow. Ambedkar was not just any other politician forced to the contrestage of politics by circumstances but a scholar of international repute, an intellectual of high calibre who had faced oppression and humiliation at each step in his childhood and youth. This filled his heart with a strong hatred for the caste system and its ideological "props", the Hindu Society. His intellectual ferocity and open disdain for Hindu Society won him the support of Dalit masses all over India transgressing all regional, linguistic and social barrier. Mahatma Phule, a low caste (Untouchable) gardener by caste was the first person to have revolted against the caste system and the Brahminical hegemony in all spheres of life as early as in 1848. Although his influence was confined to Maharashtra only, Phule is considered the father of the lower caste-revolt in India. Even Ambedkar considered Phule as his Guru.
The father of the Dalit revolution, Ambedkar was born in an "untouchable" Mahar caste. His father was a low rank officer with the British Army. In his childhood and youth, he had to face discrimination and humiliation at each step. Even, in his school he had to sit outside the classroom, for the fear of "pollution" of his upper caste classmates. Such numerous incidents left a deep scar on his psyche. The seeds of revolt were sown in his subconscious mind, quite early in his life.
Dr. Ambedker worked hard for the emancipation of the Dalits or untouchables. He was out and out an anti-Brahminist. But, he was a nationalist at the core of his heart. He was not biased while estimating the values and culture of ancient India. His anti-Brahminism emerges from a close scrutiny of Vedic and Sanskrit literature. He undertook painstaking research to ascertain if the Shudras, Dalits or Untouchables are the product of Aryan invasion. Grasping the intricacies of Aryan invasion theory he tries to challenge the Western theories and totally rejects the theory of Aryan invasion as a perversion of scientific investigation.
