This series of books, for each of the eleven Foundation Courses, has been created through the sustained deliberations and the collective editorial efforts of a large number of teachers from the colleges and the university departments of the University of Delhi. These books contain not only stimulating study materials but also outcome-oriented tasks for students to perform in class or at home, and suggestions for class presentations and group projects.

Besides offering wide-ranging knowledge of relevance to our contemporary social concerns, these books are thus aimed at implementing a new mode of interactive and creative pedagogy. It is hoped that they will serve truly to lay the foundation of the kind of liberal and enabling education that is the aim of the innovative Four-Year Undergraduate Programme launched by the University of Delhi.

The conceptualization and production of these books has been facilitated by a multidisciplinary apex Co-ordination Committee. Subject experts have created the material for each book. As a series it is hoped that the collection will introduce new perspectives and innovative teaching in the classroom.
