"Upa-ni-shad" literally means "come close and sit". Thus, the Upanishads are basically advice from gurus or sages given to pupils sitting at their feet. Upanishads are not just lectures and teachings. Though philosophical, they are mostly in the form of stories and anecdotes. Kings and sages figure in them, as do ordinary people and even animals. The background is usually a forest or a hermitage set in a forest. But there are scenes in household and courts as well.
