Indological studies have great significance in knowing the past history of this country. Various branches of Indology, such as, Indian history, archaeology, historical geography, Vedic and classical language and literature, religion and philosophy, ethnology, technical sciences, fine arts and India's cultural relations with foreign countries have given a new orientation to these studies and served the useful purpose of cultural integration.

India's cultural contacts with western, central, south castern and eastern Asia have been highlighted well to clearly understand India's life and thought and her internal and external policies throughout the ages. Thus, the Indological researches in the context of present day advanced knowledge in humanities and social sciences have been very fruitful to the society as well as to the development of scientific studies.
The department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology of different universities of India have made sincere efforts in the direction of Indological researches. Several research institutes, the Archaeological Survey of India and the archaeological departments and museums of various states have considerably contributed to the study of Indology. A large number of scholars engaged in this field have brought to light very useful Indological material. The scientific researches based mainly on archaeological explorations and excavations have further broadened the way of knowledge, which were previously based on meagre literary and linguistic sources.
